Home Battery Backup in Flagstaff

In June 2026, APS switched off power around Flagstaff on purpose — a Public Safety Power Shutoff during extreme fire weather. It is the one outage that comes with a warning, and a battery is built for it.

What a home battery runs during a Worcester winter outageThe grid is down and snow covers the array, so the grid-tied solar system produces nothing. The battery feeds a critical load panel, keeping the refrigerator, heating controls, well pump and networking running, while air conditioning, the electric range and the dryer stay off. June 27, 2026: about 8,000 APS customers in and around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon in a planned wildfire shutoff.

The short answer

Flagstaff is APS territory. On June 27, 2026, APS used a Public Safety Power Shutoff to cut power to about 8,000 customers in high fire-risk areas around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon — Doney Park, Timberline, Fort Valley, some east Flagstaff neighborhoods and more — and restored it the next day after inspecting the lines.

A PSPS is announced days ahead. That makes it the outage a battery handles best: charge it to full when the notice arrives, keep the circuits you chose running, and let solar recharge it in daylight if the system is designed to island.

Three things that are specific to here

What APS's June 2026 Public Safety Power Shutoff showed about outages in the high country.

June 27–28, 2026: a planned shutoff

APS turned off power from about 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 27 to roughly 8,000 customers in high fire-risk areas around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, during extreme wind, low humidity and dry vegetation, and restored it on June 28 after inspecting the lines.

Doney Park to east Flagstaff

APS listed Doney Park, Timberline, Fernwood, Mormon Lake, Cosnino, Sunset Crater, Fort Valley/Baderville, Walnut Canyon, Valle and some east Flagstaff neighborhoods, plus Tusayan and the Grand Canyon's south and east rims.

A program that's new — and has been used

APS created its Public Safety Power Shutoff program in 2024 as part of its wildfire mitigation plan. June 2026 was the second time fire-weather conditions were severe enough to trigger one.

What a Flagstaff battery actually does in a shutoff

A battery doesn't stop APS from calling a PSPS. It decides which circuits keep running until the lines are inspected and re-energised.

Charge to full when the notice arrives

APS sends a planning notification days ahead, then daily timing updates. That is warning most outages never give: set the battery's backup reserve to 100% before the shutoff starts, rather than relying on whatever charge it has from daily cycling.

Choose the circuits in advance

Refrigeration, internet, lights, a well pump if the house has one, and any medical equipment. A critical load panel decides what stays on, so the battery isn't drained by loads that can wait.

Grid-tied solar goes dark too

A grid-tied inverter must shut off when the utility does, PSPS included. Panels can only keep circuits up — and recharge a battery in daylight — when the system is designed to island with a battery and a backup interface.

Medical equipment: tell APS as well

A battery is not a substitute for registering life-supporting equipment with APS's Medical Care program. During the June event, the City's Murdoch Community Center was open for charging medical devices and refrigerating medicine.

Flagstaff next to the Valley

Down in the Valley, APS battery questions are mostly about the bill: Peoria covers APS's 4–7 p.m. time-of-use window, Scottsdale covers APS Storage Rewards and Surprise covers the pending APS rate case. In Flagstaff the question is the planned outage. Flagstaff's tap water has its own page: Flagstaff water quality.

Where these facts come from

What a home battery job with us covers

Installation of storage and the backup circuits behind it, with the siting and utility paperwork handled.

  • Battery installation

Wall or floor-mounted storage installed to the listing and to the residential code sections that govern where it may go.

  • Backup and critical load panel

Deciding and wiring which circuits stay live, and which must never be on backup — the choice that defines what an outage feels like.

  • Integration with existing PV solar

Connecting storage to an array that is already on the roof, including whether the existing inverter supports it.

  • Transfer switch and disconnection

The equipment that separates the house from the grid during an outage, which is what makes backup legal as well as possible.

  • Siting to code

Location, clearances, separation and impact protection assessed against the adopted code before anything is mounted.

  • Permit, inspection and utility approval

The electrical permit, the inspection, and the utility's own approval step where storage touches the service.

This is installation work. No runtime, capacity or incentive figure is quoted before your loads and your utility are confirmed. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.

What the work actually looks like

A battery job is an electrical job. The panel, the circuits and the disconnection are most of it.

Battery backup in Flagstaff, answered plainly

What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff?+

A PSPS is a planned outage APS uses in high fire-risk areas during extreme fire weather — strong winds, low humidity, dry vegetation — so its equipment cannot start or contribute to a wildfire. Power is restored after crews inspect the lines. APS created the program in 2024 as part of its Comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Plan.

Was Flagstaff affected by a PSPS in 2026?+

Yes. APS shut off power from about 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026 to approximately 8,000 customers in and around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, including Doney Park, Timberline, Fernwood, Fort Valley/Baderville, Walnut Canyon and some east Flagstaff neighborhoods, and fully restored power on June 28. APS said it was the second time conditions had triggered a PSPS.

How do I know if my address could be in a shutoff?+

APS publishes an interactive PSPS map at aps.com/psps. Addresses in the shaded (orange) area may be subject to a shutoff; outside it, a PSPS will not affect the address. APS says boundaries are approximate and can change, and in an active event its outage map has the current picture.

Does a battery help if APS gives notice?+

That is where it helps most. Notice lets you raise the battery's reserve to full and decide which circuits stay on before the power goes. How long it then lasts depends on its capacity and what it carries, so we don't quote a runtime before seeing the panel.

Who is the electric utility in Flagstaff?+

Arizona Public Service (APS) serves Flagstaff. We confirm the utility at your address before designing anything, and handle the APS interconnection paperwork for a battery that runs in parallel with the grid.

Who installs it, and who is responsible afterwards?+

Seamless Home is the licensed contractor of record on the work it runs. Installation is performed by vetted installing partners engaged as our subcontractors, so the permit, the inspection and any correction notice carry one name. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.
