On a dense Cambridge lot the first question is not kilowatt-hours. It is whether IRC R328 leaves you a legal wall, a legal room and three feet of clearance — and whether the association agrees.

A Cambridge battery has to satisfy three things at once: anti-islanding backup so the house stays up when Eversource does not, a legal location under IRC R328, and a service that can accept the interconnection. Dense two- and three-family housing makes the second and third the usual blockers. The brochure kilowatt-hour number is the easy part.
Summer demand-response is real and is confirmed per program year. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.

Why Cambridge is a siting problem first
Worcester's well pump and Boston's harbour wind are real. Neither one is why a Cambridge battery fails plan review.
Siting is the design, not an afterthought
IRC Section R328 is strict about where a residential battery may live: not in a sleeping room, with unit and aggregate energy caps, and with two separate 3-foot rules. On a Cambridge lot those rooms and those distances are the project. A 13.5 kWh unit that does not have a legal wall is not a system. The siting checker exists because this is where dense-housing jobs die.
Two- and three-family houses, and associations
A large share of Cambridge housing is two-family, three-family or condominium. The battery is attached to an electrical service and a property, not to a vibe. Shared basements, party walls and association bylaws are survey items, not install-day discoveries. HOA and private-approval rules still apply even where a solar-access statute limits what an association can refuse.
The same anti-islanding rule, a tighter panel
Eversource serves Cambridge. Grid-tied solar still shuts down in an outage. What is different from a Worcester ranch is the panel: heat pumps, induction ranges and EV chargers in a 100-amp service are common, and the battery interconnection has to fit that arithmetic rather than assume a 200-amp upgrade will be welcome on a historic street.

Small, high-consequence circuits. Not a suburban whole-home list.
Refrigeration, networking, medical devices
The loads that make a multi-day outage tenable in a dense neighbourhood where going somewhere else is not simple.
Heating controls — small, high value
Gas heat is still common. Controls and circulators are a small circuit. A heat pump on the critical panel is a much larger one, and in a Cambridge winter it will win the argument against runtime.
Not the well, not the elevator — unless they are
Municipal water. Occasional small elevators in renovated houses. Neither is the default. We will not copy a suburban critical-load list onto a Cambridge three-family.

Can I put a battery in my Cambridge basement?+
Sometimes. IRC R328 permits specific locations and prohibits others, with energy caps and separation rules. A basement that is also a sleeping room is not available. I am in a condominium. Can I add a battery?+
Only with the association's process, the building's electrical service, and a location that satisfies R328. Third-party-owned solar, if present, adds a consent question of its own. We will not tell you the bylaws always allow it or always forbid it.
Why will my solar not run during an outage?+
Anti-islanding. A grid-tied inverter must shut down when it loses the grid. A battery and the switching that isolates the house are what change that.
