Home Battery Backup in Somerville

Somerville CCE fixes supply prices through January 2028, while Eversource Basic Service jumped to 17.323¢ in August 2026. Neither one keeps the lights on when the feeder drops — and a battery's pay here comes from ConnectedSolutions, not the supply rate.

What a home battery runs during a Worcester winter outageThe grid is down and snow covers the array, so the grid-tied solar system produces nothing. The battery feeds a critical load panel, keeping the refrigerator, heating controls, well pump and networking running, while air conditioning, the electric range and the dryer stay off. A reserve floor is held back for outages.GRID DOWNSOLAR 0 kWFRIDGEHEATPUMPWIFIA/CRANGEDRYEROFFBATTERYreserve floor heldback for outages

Somerville CCE 13.220–16.060¢ to Jan 2028 · Eversource Basic 17.323¢ · ConnectedSolutions $275/kW.

The short answer

Somerville is Eversource territory. Supply for most homes runs through Somerville Community Choice Electricity: 13.220¢, 14.840¢ (default) or 16.060¢ per kWh, fixed until January 2028 meter reads. Eversource's own Basic Service moved from 15.065¢ to 17.323¢ at the August 2026 reset.

A battery doesn't change either number. What it earns in Somerville is ConnectedSolutions — $275 per kW of average summer-event contribution — and what it buys is power when Eversource's lines are down. Size it to the circuits that must stay on, not to the supply price.

Why Somerville is different from the Newton and Medford pages

Newton's aggregation publishes one price; Medford sits on National Grid. Somerville publishes three Eversource-area prices — and a Basic Service swing that shows why they exist.

Three fixed supply prices through January 2028

Somerville CCE lists Somerville Basic at 13.220¢/kWh, Somerville Local Green (the default) at 14.840¢ and 100% Local Green at 16.060¢, fixed from December 2024 until January 2028 meter reads.

Basic Service moved 2.26¢ in one reset

The City's July 2026 opt-out notice listed Eversource residential Basic Service at 15.065¢ for February–July 2026; the CCE site lists 17.323¢ for August 2026–January 2027. Basic Service resets every six months.

Rate tools that aren't batteries

The CCE site points residents to Eversource's 42% low-income discount, which applies to the whole bill, and to the heat-pump delivery rate that began November 1, 2025. Check both before sizing anything.

What a Somerville battery actually has to do

Program pay is seasonal. Backup is whenever the feeder drops.

ConnectedSolutions pays $275 per kW

Mass Save's ConnectedSolutions pays $275 per kW of a battery's average contribution during summer events. Its own example: a battery that holds 5 kW through events could earn up to $1,375 a year.

Up to 60 events, 3–8 p.m., June through September

Events run on non-holidays from June 1 to September 30, no more than 60 a summer and up to three hours each. Reserve settings still need to leave stored energy for an outage.

Aggregation changes price, not restoration

The City's aggregation plan says Eversource still maintains the poles and wires, reads the meter and responds to outages. Supply choice doesn't change what happens when a feeder drops.

Solar credits stay put

Somerville CCE states that solar customers keep their net metering credits while in the program, so adding a battery to an existing system doesn't mean leaving the CCE.

Somerville next to Cambridge, Medford and Newton

Next door in Cambridge, dense two- and three-family lots make battery siting the binding constraint — the same question applies on many Somerville streets. Medford is on National Grid with a $7,500 ConnectedSolutions+ offer, and Newton is Eversource under a single Newton Power Choice price. Somerville's water story is on Somerville water quality.

What a home battery job with us covers

Installation of storage and the backup circuits behind it, with the siting and utility paperwork handled.

  • Battery installation

Wall or floor-mounted storage installed to the listing and to the residential code sections that govern where it may go.

  • Backup and critical load panel

Deciding and wiring which circuits stay live, and which must never be on backup — the choice that defines what an outage feels like.

  • Integration with existing PV solar

Connecting storage to an array that is already on the roof, including whether the existing inverter supports it.

  • Transfer switch and disconnection

The equipment that separates the house from the grid during an outage, which is what makes backup legal as well as possible.

  • Siting to code

Location, clearances, separation and impact protection assessed against the adopted code before anything is mounted.

  • Permit, inspection and utility approval

The electrical permit, the inspection, and the utility's own approval step where storage touches the service.

This is installation work. No runtime, capacity or incentive figure is quoted before your loads and your utility are confirmed. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.

What the work actually looks like

A battery job is an electrical job. The panel, the circuits and the disconnection are most of it.

Which circuits stay live in an outage is decided at the panel, and it is the decision homeowners regret getting wrong.

What are Somerville CCE's rates?+

Somerville Basic 13.220¢/kWh, Somerville Local Green (the default) 14.840¢ and Somerville 100% Local Green 16.060¢, fixed from December 2024 until January 2028 meter reads. Prices include a $0.001/kWh consultant fee and cover supply only.

Does a battery change my Somerville CCE rate?+

No. The CCE sets your supply price; a battery doesn't change it. What a battery can add is ConnectedSolutions pay for discharging during summer peak events, and backup power when Eversource's lines are down.

What does ConnectedSolutions pay in Somerville?+

Mass Save lists $275 per kW of average contribution during summer events, with up to 60 events between 3 and 8 p.m. from June 1 to September 30. Batteries can be added with new solar, to existing solar, or stand-alone.
