In 2024 Scottsdale measured arsenic up to 8.4 ppb, TTHM averaging 52.8 ppb, and hardness of 13 to 17 grains per gallon in three neighbourhood bands. All of it met federal limits. The useful question is which of those is actually at your tap.

The short answer

Scottsdale Water, public water system AZ0407098, is 72 percent Colorado River (CAP), 14 percent Salt and Verde (SRP), 9 percent recycled for irrigation and recharge, and 5 percent groundwater — including wells in the North Indian Bend Wash Superfund area that run through granular activated carbon for trichloroethylene. The 2025 report covers 2024 monitoring.

What households notice is hardness in the 13 to 17 grain band, published by neighbourhood, and the chlorine byproducts that come with treating canal water. Reverse osmosis, carbon and a softener are three different answers. A Superfund headline is not a specification.

Where Scottsdale water comes from

The 2024 portfolio is in the CCR: 72 percent CAP, 14 percent SRP, 9 percent recycled, 5 percent groundwater. Recycled water is not currently a potable blend.

Colorado River via CAP — 72 percent

Treated at the CAP Water Treatment Plant on the Scottsdale Water Campus (up to 70 million gallons a day). CAP I and II are conventional; CAP III is ultrafiltration membrane. Granular activated carbon is there for taste, odour and disinfection byproducts. This is the dominant 2024 supply.

Salt and Verde Rivers via SRP — 14 percent

Treated at the Chaparral Water Treatment Plant near Hayden and McDonald, ultrafiltration plus granular activated carbon, 27 million gallons a day. A different watershed from CAP, which is one reason hardness and byproducts are reported as ranges rather than a single city number.

Groundwater, including North Indian Bend Wash — 5 percent

Twenty-one active wells. Two treatment plants — the Central Groundwater Treatment Facility and the North Indian Bend Wash granular activated carbon plant — treat Superfund-site groundwater for trichloroethylene. Those plants were built by the parties the EPA deemed potentially responsible; they pay operating costs. The water is treated to levels that exceed federal and state drinking water standards under EPA, ADEQ and Maricopa County oversight. That is a treatment story, not a reason to avoid the tap.

What the 2025 report actually says

Federal MCLs are fixed. The ranges are from Scottsdale Water's 2025 report of 2024 compliance monitoring for PWS ID AZ0407098. A later CCR supersedes them.

Arsenic

Naturally occurring. The federal MCL is 10 ppb, based on a running annual average. The 2025 report (2024 monitoring) lists a low of 1.1 ppb, a high of 8.4 ppb, a system average of 4.1 ppb and a highest running annual average of 8.4 ppb. Reverse osmosis addresses it; carbon filtration does not.

Total trihalomethanes (TTHM)

Disinfection byproducts from chlorinating surface water. Federal MCL 80 ppb. The report lists 20.1 to 54.6 ppb with a locational average of 52.8 ppb. Scottsdale uses granular activated carbon at the CAP plant specifically to reduce the organic matter that forms them.

Haloacetic acids (HAA5)

Federal MCL 60 ppb. The report lists 3.8 to 13.0 ppb with a locational average of 10.2 ppb — well below the limit, and still the reason carbon is in the treatment train. A softener does not address it.

Uranium and chromium

Uranium (2024): not-detected to 14 ppb against a federal MCL of 30 ppb, system average 4.2. Total chromium: not-detected to 26.9 ppb against 100 ppb, system average 9.2. Both are dissolved inorganics. Reverse osmosis is the residential option; neither is a reason to panic on a compliant system.

Hardness by neighbourhood band

Not a health contaminant. The 2025 report publishes three bands: south of Indian School Road, 13 to 15 grains per gallon (230 to 260 ppm); Indian School to Chaparral Road, 13 to 17 gpg (215 to 285 ppm); north of Chaparral Road, 13 to 17 gpg (230 to 290 ppm). The City states outright that additional hardness treatment at the plant would not be cost-effective, because most residential use here is outdoor.

What we are not putting on this page

A reading for your address, a Superfund scare, or a claim that recycled water is in your drinking glass today. Recycled water currently irrigates turf and recharges the aquifer. Potable reuse is described in the CCR as a plan, with a possible blend as early as 2029 — not as a present fact.

Every concentration on this page is taken from the utility's own 2025 Water Quality Report (2024 monitoring). Independent compilations exist; they are not the source used here.

Matching treatment to the finding

The plant will not soften for you. Superfund treatment is already happening on the wells that need it. What is left is a household decision based on a tap test.

Reverse osmosis, at the tap

Addresses dissolved inorganics — arsenic, uranium, chromium. Under-sink for drinking and cooking. Not a whole-house hardness solution.

Activated carbon

The plant already uses GAC on surface water. A household carbon stage is still the right answer for remaining chlorine byproducts and taste. It does not remove arsenic.

Ion-exchange softener

The answer to 13 to 17 grain water, which is what spots glass and shortens water-heater life. The City will not centralise softening; that decision is in the CCR. A household softener is a plumbing modification and it adds sodium.

Sometimes nothing

If a test comes back unremarkable, that is the finding. Safe-yield and Superfund treatment are reasons the supply is carefully managed, not reasons a filter is mandatory.

Is Scottsdale tap water safe to drink?+

Scottsdale Water treats to federal standards, public water system identifier AZ0407098, and publishes the results in its annual Water Quality Report. The 2025 report covers 2024 monitoring. A compliant system can still contain compounds a household would rather filter. That is a statement about how federal limits are set, not an allegation about the utility.

What does the North Indian Bend Wash Superfund site mean for my tap?+

A small share of Scottsdale's supply is groundwater, and some of those wells are in the North Indian Bend Wash area historically contaminated with trichloroethylene. The City operates GAC treatment built and funded by the potentially responsible parties, with EPA, ADEQ and Maricopa County oversight, and states that the treated water exceeds federal and state drinking water standards. Superfund in the aquifer is not the same thing as Superfund in the glass. A test at your tap is still the way to know what is actually there.

Why does hardness change at Indian School Road?+

Because the blend of CAP, SRP and well water is not uniform across the city. The 2025 CCR publishes three hardness bands split at Indian School Road and Chaparral Road, all in the 13 to 17 grain range. Outdoor irrigation is most of residential use, which is why the City does not soften at the plant. Indoor spotting and water-heater scale are a household problem, not a plant problem.

Is recycled water in Scottsdale drinking water?+

Not as a current potable blend. The Advanced Water Treatment Plant produces water used for turf irrigation and aquifer recharge — more than 70 billion gallons injected since 1998, which is how Scottsdale became the first Arizona city to reach safe yield (more water into the aquifer than it takes out) in 2006. The CCR describes a possible purified potable blend as early as 2029. That is a plan, and we are not reporting it as a present fact.
