Home Battery Backup in Lansing
BWL prices weekday afternoons higher and pays a credit only after a three-day outage. A battery handles both.

On-peak 1–8 p.m. weekdays · RES1 ~17.8¢ on-peak · Off-Peak Savers summer peak 30.5¢ · $25 credit after 72 hours.
The short answer
Lansing is served by the municipal Board of Water & Light (BWL). On-peak is 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays. Standard RES1 is about $0.1778 per kWh on-peak and $0.1504 off-peak; the optional Off-Peak Savers rate posts a summer on-peak of 30.53¢ against 11.77¢ off-peak (rates effective October 1, 2026).
A battery can carry part of the house through that peak and keep chosen circuits on in an outage. BWL's extended outage credit is $25 after 72 consecutive hours — useful after the fact, but it does not keep a sump pump running. The May 16, 2025 storm peaked around 24,000 outages.

BWL rates and outage credits
From BWL's Time of Use Rates and Outage Credit pages.
On-peak every weekday afternoon
BWL counts 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday as on-peak year-round. Weekends, six NERC/MISO holidays and 8 p.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays are off-peak.
RES1 vs Off-Peak Savers
Standard RES1 is about $0.1504 per kWh off-peak and $0.1778 on-peak. The optional RESTOU Off-Peak Savers rate posts a much wider summer gap: 11.77¢ off-peak vs 30.53¢ on-peak (rates effective October 1, 2026).
A $25 credit after 72 hours
BWL's own extended outage credit is $25 when an outage attributable to BWL-owned equipment lasts 72 consecutive hours or more. You apply within three months; processing can take up to 45 days.

The weekday peak, the optional Off-Peak Savers gap, the May 2025 storm and backup circuits.
Credits are not backup
The $25 credit pays after a three-day outage. It does not keep a sump pump, furnace blower or refrigerator running while the crew is still restoring lines.
Cover the 1–8 p.m. window
A battery charged off-peak can carry part of the house through BWL's weekday afternoon peak. How much depends on capacity and what you run — especially on RESTOU.
May 2025 showed the outage risk
On May 16, 2025 BWL reported about 24,000 outages at the overnight peak after a severe storm, with primary lines down, broken poles and mutual-aid crews called in.
Choose the circuits that matter
Sump pump, furnace blower and controls, refrigeration, internet, lights and medical devices. A critical load panel decides what the battery carries in an outage.
May 2025, and Lansing next to Detroit and Grand Rapids
On May 16, 2025 BWL reported about 24,000 outages at the overnight peak after a severe storm, with primary lines down, broken poles and more than 20 mutual-aid line and tree crews called in. Mast damage on the customer side of the service is the homeowner's repair before BWL can restore that service.
In Detroit, DTE is the utility and Rider 18 doesn't permit battery export. In Grand Rapids, Consumers Energy sets a June–September weekday 2–7 p.m. summer peak. Lansing homes are on municipal BWL, whose peak is 1–8 p.m. year-round and whose outage credit is a separate $25 / 72-hour rule — not the MPSC credit.

What a home battery job with us covers
Installation of storage and the backup circuits behind it, with the siting and utility paperwork handled.
Battery installation
Wall or floor-mounted storage installed to the listing and to the residential code sections that govern where it may go.
Backup and critical load panel
Deciding and wiring which circuits stay live, and which must never be on backup — the choice that defines what an outage feels like.
Integration with existing PV solar
Connecting storage to an array that is already on the roof, including whether the existing inverter supports it.
Transfer switch and disconnection
The equipment that separates the house from the grid during an outage, which is what makes backup legal as well as possible.
Siting to code
Location, clearances, separation and impact protection assessed against the adopted code before anything is mounted.
Permit, inspection and utility approval
The electrical permit, the inspection, and the utility's own approval step where storage touches the service.
This is installation work. No runtime, capacity or incentive figure is quoted before your loads and your utility are confirmed. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.
What the work actually looks like
A battery job is an electrical job. The panel, the circuits and the disconnection are most of it.

Battery backup in Lansing, answered plainly
Who is the electric utility in Lansing?+
Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) is the municipal utility for Lansing. It restores outages, runs Time-of-Use rates and pays its own extended outage credit.
What are BWL's on-peak hours?+
1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Off-peak covers 8 p.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays, all day Saturday and Sunday, and six NERC/MISO holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas).
What does BWL charge on RES1?+
BWL's Understanding Time of Use Rates page lists the standard RES1 calculation at $0.1504 per kWh off-peak and $0.1778 per kWh on-peak year-round. A detailed table effective October 1, 2026 shows summer and winter weekday/weekend cents that match those figures for RES1.
What is the Off-Peak Savers (RESTOU) rate?+
An optional residential rate for customers who shift load off-peak. Effective October 1, 2026, summer weekdays are 11.77¢/kWh off-peak and 30.53¢/kWh on-peak (1–8 p.m.); winter weekdays are 12.00¢ off-peak and 18.26¢ on-peak. Contact BWL to enroll.
How much does BWL pay for a long outage?+
BWL's Outage Credit page offers a $25 extended outage credit after 72 consecutive hours when the outage is solely attributable to BWL-owned equipment. Apply within three months; BWL says review can take up to 45 days. This is BWL's municipal credit, not the MPSC credit that applies to DTE and Consumers Energy.
How long will a battery run my house?+
It depends on capacity and which circuits you put on it, so we don't quote a runtime before seeing the panel.
Who installs it, and who is responsible afterwards?+
Seamless Home is the licensed contractor of record on the work it runs. Installation is performed by vetted installing partners engaged as our subcontractors, so the permit, the inspection and any correction notice carry one name. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.
