Home Battery Backup in Detroit

DTE pays an automatic credit when an outage runs long. A battery keeps chosen circuits on, but DTE's solar tariff doesn't let it export to the grid.

What a home battery runs during a Worcester winter outageThe grid is down and snow covers the array, so the grid-tied solar system produces nothing. The battery feeds a critical load panel, keeping the refrigerator, heating controls, well pump and networking running, while air conditioning, the electric range and the dryer stay off. The short answer

Detroit is served by DTE Electric. Under Michigan Public Service Commission rules, DTE automatically credits customers for long or repeated outages: $44 for outages after October 1, 2026, plus more for every further day.

A credit doesn't keep the furnace blower or sump pump running. A battery does. Under DTE's Rider 18 solar tariff, though, battery export to the grid is not permitted, so a Detroit battery is sized for backup and your own use, not for selling power.

DTE's outage credits

From DTE's Damages & Reliability Credits page and the MPSC's September 2025 order.

$44 for a long outage

DTE credits $42 for qualifying outages from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026, and $44 for outages after October 1, 2026, plus another credit for every further 24 hours.

When the credit starts

After 16 hours when 1% or fewer of DTE customers are out, 48 hours when more than 1% but under 10% are out, and 96 hours when 10% or more are out.

Six outages in a year

Six power outages in a 12-month period also earn a credit, and the count then resets. Credits are automatic and post within one to two billing cycles.

Where a battery fits in Detroit

Credits, DTE's solar tariff and backup circuits.

Credits are not backup

The MPSC says the credits may not fully cover expenses and losses when the power goes out. DTE says it does not pay for storm-related food loss or hotel stays.

Solar under Rider 18

DTE bills power you take from the grid at the retail rate and credits power you send out at the lower power-supply rate. Excess credits bank and don't expire.

Battery export is not permitted

DTE's solar page says export from batteries on Rider 18 systems is not permitted. Adding a battery means contacting DTE and submitting a new application.

Choose the circuits that matter

Furnace blower and controls, refrigeration, sump pump, internet, lights and medical devices. A critical load panel decides what the battery carries in an outage.

How Michigan's credit got here, and Detroit next to Houston

Before 2023, Michigan customers could get only a one-time $25 credit, and only by asking. The MPSC's 2023 rules set $35 a day, indexed it to inflation and made it automatic. Michigan utility customers received $8,456,093 in credits in 2024, against $1,213,286 in 2022.

In Houston, CenterPoint delivers power while a retail provider sells it, and solar buyback depends on the plan you pick. In Detroit, DTE does both jobs, and its tariff sets the solar credit and the battery export rule.

What a home battery job with us covers

Installation of storage and the backup circuits behind it, with the siting and utility paperwork handled.

  • Battery installation

Wall or floor-mounted storage installed to the listing and to the residential code sections that govern where it may go.

  • Backup and critical load panel

Deciding and wiring which circuits stay live, and which must never be on backup — the choice that defines what an outage feels like.

  • Integration with existing PV solar

Connecting storage to an array that is already on the roof, including whether the existing inverter supports it.

  • Transfer switch and disconnection

The equipment that separates the house from the grid during an outage, which is what makes backup legal as well as possible.

  • Siting to code

Location, clearances, separation and impact protection assessed against the adopted code before anything is mounted.

  • Permit, inspection and utility approval

The electrical permit, the inspection, and the utility's own approval step where storage touches the service.

This is installation work. No runtime, capacity or incentive figure is quoted before your loads and your utility are confirmed. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.

What the work actually looks like

A battery job is an electrical job. The panel, the circuits and the disconnection are most of it.

Battery backup in Detroit, answered plainly

Who is the electric utility in Detroit?+

DTE Electric. It delivers power, restores outages, pays MPSC-required outage credits and handles solar and battery interconnection.

How much does DTE pay for a long outage?+

$42 for qualifying outages between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026, and $44 for outages after October 1, 2026, with an additional credit for every further 24 hours. Credits are automatic.

How long does an outage have to last for a DTE credit?+

More than 16 hours when 1% or fewer of DTE customers are affected, more than 48 hours when more than 1% but under 10% are affected, and more than 96 hours when 10% or more are out. Six outages in 12 months also qualify.

Can my battery send power to the grid in Detroit?+

Not on a Rider 18 solar system. DTE's rooftop solar page says export from batteries on Rider 18 systems is not permitted, and you need to contact DTE and submit a new application when adding a battery.

Does my solar keep running in a DTE outage?+

Not on its own. DTE says grid-following solar inverters shut off during an outage. A battery set up to island from the grid is what keeps chosen circuits on.

How long will a battery run my house?+

It depends on capacity and which circuits you put on it, so we don't quote a runtime before seeing the panel.

Who installs it, and who is responsible afterwards?+

Seamless Home is the licensed contractor of record on the work it runs. Installation is performed by vetted installing partners engaged as our subcontractors, so the permit, the inspection and any correction notice carry one name. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.
