Home Battery Backup in Fredericksburg

Inside the city line, Fredericksburg is Dominion Energy territory. Many Fredericksburg mailing addresses in Spotsylvania and Stafford are Rappahannock Electric Cooperative — whose residential net-metering capacity was down to 3.0% in October 2026. The utility on your bill decides the rules.

What a home battery runs during a Worcester winter outageThe grid is down and snow covers the array, so the grid-tied solar system produces nothing. The battery feeds a critical load panel, keeping the refrigerator, heating controls, well pump and networking running, while air conditioning, the electric range and the dryer stay off. The short answer

The City of Fredericksburg is on Dominion's list of Virginia communities it serves. Much of the area around it — parts of Spotsylvania, Stafford and Caroline — is Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC), which is headquartered in Fredericksburg. A Fredericksburg mailing address does not tell you which one you have; your bill does.

On REC, residential net metering is capped at 20 kW AC and 100% of your past 12 months of use, and REC listed only 3.0% (1,097 kW) of residential net-metering capacity available in October 2026. That makes storing your own solar more relevant than exporting it. On either utility, solar alone shuts off in an outage — backup needs a battery and a transfer switch.

Why Fredericksburg is different from other Virginia battery pages

Every other Virginia page here has one utility. Fredericksburg has two, split roughly at the city line.

The City is Dominion

Dominion's Virginia Electric Communities Serviced list includes Fredericksburg, handled from its Fredericksburg area office in the Northern division.

The ring around it is often REC

REC serves 184,000+ connections in portions of 22 counties, including Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford, and runs its Fredericksburg office at 247 Industrial Court (22408). Its power comes from ODEC and SEPA, not Dominion.

REC's residential net-metering room is nearly used

REC's net-metering page listed 3.0% of residential capacity — 1,097 kW — available in October 2026. When export capacity is scarce, a battery that stores daytime solar for the house becomes the more useful half of the system.

What a Fredericksburg-area battery actually has to do

The paperwork follows the utility. The physics of an outage do not.

Solar alone goes dark in an outage

Dominion's net-metering FAQ says grid-tied generation is forced offline when the grid is down, and that storage plus a transfer switch is the only way to power the home from it during an outage.

REC sizing: 20 kW AC and 100% of your history

REC caps residential net-metered systems at 20 kW AC and at no more than 100% of the member's past 12 months of billing. A battery does not change that cap; it changes how much of the solar you use yourself.

REC excess is credited at wholesale under a PPA

REC says members who elect its PPA are paid for excess generation after 12 months at REC's avoided wholesale cost — about 30–40% of the retail energy rate. That gap is the battery argument on REC.

Approval before installation

REC requires a PowerClerk application approved before any equipment goes in, a licensed Virginia electrician's certification, an interconnection inspection and a Permission to Operate letter. REC also bars non-approved meter collars.

Fredericksburg next to Richmond, Arlington and Harrisonburg

Richmond covers Dominion's consumption-based sizing rule; Arlington and Alexandria cover Northern Virginia siting and group buys on Dominion. Like Harrisonburg, where the municipal utility's own rule applies, Fredericksburg is a page about checking which utility you have before anything else.

Where these figures come from

Everything on this page traces to Dominion Energy and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.

What a home battery job with us covers

Installation of storage and the backup circuits behind it, with the siting and utility paperwork handled.

  • Battery installation

Wall or floor-mounted storage installed to the listing and to the residential code sections that govern where it may go.

  • Backup and critical load panel

Deciding and wiring which circuits stay live, and which must never be on backup — the choice that defines what an outage feels like.

  • Integration with existing PV solar

Connecting storage to an array that is already on the roof, including whether the existing inverter supports it.

  • Transfer switch and disconnection

The equipment that separates the house from the grid during an outage, which is what makes backup legal as well as possible.

  • Siting to code

Location, clearances, separation and impact protection assessed against the adopted code before anything is mounted.

  • Permit, inspection and utility approval

The electrical permit, the inspection, and the utility's own approval step where storage touches the service.

This is installation work. No runtime, capacity or incentive figure is quoted before your loads and your utility are confirmed. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.

What the work actually looks like

A battery job is an electrical job. The panel, the circuits and the disconnection are most of it.

Fredericksburg battery backup, answered plainly

Is Fredericksburg Dominion or REC?+

Inside the City of Fredericksburg, Dominion — the city is on Dominion's list of Virginia communities served. Many nearby addresses in Spotsylvania, Stafford and Caroline are Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, even with a Fredericksburg mailing address. The utility name on your bill settles it.

Why does REC's net-metering capacity matter for a battery?+

REC listed only 3.0% of residential net-metering capacity (1,097 kW) available in October 2026. If export capacity is limited, storing your own solar for evening and outage use is where a battery earns its place. We confirm current availability with REC before designing.

How big can a solar system be on REC?+

REC's page caps residential net-metered systems at 20 kW AC and at no more than 100% of your past 12 months of billing history.

Will solar keep my house on in an outage?+

Not by itself. Dominion's net-metering FAQ says grid-tied generation shuts off during an outage; storage and a transfer switch are the only way to power the home from it. The same safety logic applies on REC.

Do I need utility approval before installing?+

On REC, yes — a PowerClerk application must be approved before equipment is installed, followed by electrician certification, an REC inspection and Permission to Operate. Dominion has its own net-metering application.

Who installs it, and who is responsible afterwards?+

Seamless Home is the licensed contractor of record on the work it runs. Installation is performed by vetted installing partners engaged as our subcontractors. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.
