Home Battery Backup in Brookline

Eversource delivers Brookline's power, and most homes buy a 100% renewable default supply through the Town's program. A battery adds outage backup and summer event payments.

What a home battery runs during a Worcester winter outageThe grid is down and snow covers the array, so the grid-tied solar system produces nothing. The battery feeds a critical load panel, keeping the refrigerator, heating controls, well pump and networking running, while air conditioning, the electric range and the dryer stay off. The short answer

Brookline is on Eversource for delivery, and most homes buy supply through Brookline Green Electricity. Its default product is 100% renewable at 14.681¢/kWh, fixed through December 2027 meter reads. The Town says participants saved more than $14.5 million from 2017 through December 2025.

A battery doesn't change any of that. It stores whatever supply you buy, carries chosen circuits in an outage, and can earn $275 per kW through Mass Save's ConnectedSolutions summer events.

What Brookline's supply program means for a battery

From the Town of Brookline's BGE page and program site.

A 100% renewable default supply

Most Brookline homes are enrolled in Brookline Green Electricity. Its default product, Brookline Green, adds Massachusetts Class I renewables to reach a 100% renewable supply at 14.681¢ per kWh.

Prices end with December 2027 reads

Brookline Basic is 13.400¢, Brookline Green 14.681¢ and Brookline All Green 17.525¢, fixed through December 2027. Eversource's residential Basic Service is 17.323¢ from August 2026 to January 2027.

Eversource still delivers

BGE changes only the supply line on your bill. Eversource handles delivery, outages and billing, and the Town says solar customers keep all their net metering credits in the program.

What a home battery does in Brookline

Outage backup, summer event payments and financing.

Earn from summer events

Enrolled batteries in Mass Save's ConnectedSolutions earn $275 per kW of average contribution during summer events. Mass Save's example: a 5 kW contribution could earn up to $1,375 a year.

Know when events happen

Non-holidays from June 1 to September 30, between 3 and 8 p.m., no more than 60 times a summer and at most three hours each.

Choose the circuits that matter

Refrigeration, heating controls, internet, lights, sump pumps and medical devices. A critical load panel decides what the battery carries in an outage.

Financing exists

Mass Save's 0% HEAT Loan covers batteries up to $25,000. We price the battery with and without it so the comparison is clear.

Brookline next to Newton, Somerville and Boston

Newton and Somerville also pair Eversource delivery with a city supply program, on different prices and terms. Boston covers the service-panel questions (heat pumps, EV chargers, a full busbar) that can apply in Brookline houses too. Brookline's own program has run since 2017, and its current prices end with December 2027 meter reads.

What a home battery job with us covers

Installation of storage and the backup circuits behind it, with the siting and utility paperwork handled.

  • Battery installation

Wall or floor-mounted storage installed to the listing and to the residential code sections that govern where it may go.

  • Backup and critical load panel

Deciding and wiring which circuits stay live, and which must never be on backup — the choice that defines what an outage feels like.

  • Integration with existing PV solar

Connecting storage to an array that is already on the roof, including whether the existing inverter supports it.

  • Transfer switch and disconnection

The equipment that separates the house from the grid during an outage, which is what makes backup legal as well as possible.

  • Siting to code

Location, clearances, separation and impact protection assessed against the adopted code before anything is mounted.

  • Permit, inspection and utility approval

The electrical permit, the inspection, and the utility's own approval step where storage touches the service.

This is installation work. No runtime, capacity or incentive figure is quoted before your loads and your utility are confirmed. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.

What the work actually looks like

A battery job is an electrical job. The panel, the circuits and the disconnection are most of it.

Battery backup in Brookline, answered plainly

Who is the electric utility in Brookline?+

Eversource delivers power, restores outages and sends the bill. Most homes buy their supply through Brookline Green Electricity, the Town's program since 2017, which shows on the Eversource bill.

What does Brookline Green Electricity cost?+

Through December 2027: Brookline Basic 13.400¢, Brookline Green (the default) 14.681¢ and Brookline All Green 17.525¢ per kWh, each including a 0.1¢ administration fee. Eversource's residential Basic Service is 17.323¢ from August 2026 to January 2027. The Town says savings against Basic Service can't be guaranteed because Eversource's rate changes every six months.

Does BGE affect solar net metering or a battery?+

The Town says solar customers keep all net metering credits while in BGE. The program changes supply only, so it doesn't change how a battery is interconnected or how ConnectedSolutions pays.

How does ConnectedSolutions work for a Brookline battery?+

Eversource customers can enroll an eligible battery through its manufacturer. Mass Save pays $275 per kW of average contribution during summer events, which run June 1 to September 30 between 3 and 8 p.m., up to 60 times a summer and no more than three hours each.

How long will a battery run my house?+

It depends on capacity and which circuits you put on it, so we don't quote a runtime before seeing the panel.

Who installs it, and who is responsible afterwards?+

Seamless Home is the licensed contractor of record on the work it runs. Installation is performed by vetted installing partners engaged as our subcontractors, so the permit, the inspection and any correction notice carry one name. Coverage is confirmed per service area rather than promised as blanket availability.
