How Many Watts Does a Toaster Use? 2-Slice vs 4-Slice, Amps and kWh

By Seamless Home Team, Home services operations · October 22, 2026 · Updated October 22, 2026

Quick answer

Most toasters draw 800 to 1,400 watts while they're toasting. That is the range in Virginia Cooperative Extension's appliance table, which lists a toaster oven at 1,225 watts. Two-slice models sit at the lower end: retailer listings show a Hamilton Beach 2-slice at 850 watts and a Cuisinart 2-slice at 900 watts. Four-slice models with two independent sides run higher, up to 1,800 watts on Cuisinart's 4-slice compact toaster spec sheet. At 120 volts, 900 watts is 7.5 amps and 1,800 watts is 15 amps. Because a toast cycle lasts only a few minutes, the energy is small: as an illustration, 1,200 watts for 3 minutes is 0.06 kWh.

A toaster is a set of resistance wires and a timer. While the lever is down, those wires draw close to the full rating on the label; when the timer pops, the draw stops. So the wattage is high, but only for a few minutes at a time.

Virginia Cooperative Extension's figures are a general guide, not a model rating. The model figures are from the product listing or spec sheet named, as of October 2026. Your toaster's own rating label, usually on the bottom, is the number that counts.

Why four slices can mean twice the watts

A 4-slice toaster with two sets of controls is effectively two 2-slice toasters in one housing. Cuisinart's spec sheet for its CPT-142 4-slice compact toaster lists 1,800 watts at 120 volts with dual control panels; the matching 2-slice compact model is listed at 900 watts. Toast on one side only and a dual-control toaster draws roughly half its rating. Toast on both and it draws the full figure.

Not every 4-slice model doubles. Hamilton Beach's 4-slice stainless model is listed at 1,500 watts. Wide-slot and long-slot designs vary too, so check the label rather than counting slots.

Amps: the number that matters in a kitchen

Divide watts by volts. On a standard 120-volt receptacle:

WattageAmps at 120 V
800 W6.7 A
850 W7.1 A
900 W7.5 A
1,225 W (toaster oven)10.2 A
1,400 W11.7 A
1,500 W12.5 A
1,800 W15.0 A

The watts to amps calculator does the same math for any rating.

Kitchen countertop receptacles in a modern home are fed by 20-amp small-appliance circuits, and the rules for how much one appliance can use are laid out in how many outlets on a 20 amp circuit. The practical problem is stacking. A 15-amp, 1,800-watt toaster leaves 5 amps on a 20-amp circuit. A coffee maker at 900 to 1,200 watts (Virginia Cooperative Extension's range) adds 7.5 to 10 amps, and a microwave at 750 to 1,100 watts on the extension table adds more. Two heating appliances on one circuit at breakfast is the usual reason a kitchen breaker trips.

Energy: watts are high, kWh are tiny

Virginia Cooperative Extension's formula is wattage × hours used per day ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day. A toaster's hours are measured in minutes:

  • 900 W for 3 minutes (0.05 h) = 0.045 kWh
  • 1,200 W for 3 minutes = 0.06 kWh
  • 1,800 W for 4 minutes (both sides, 0.067 h) = 0.12 kWh

These are illustrations, not measurements; your shade setting and how often you toast change them. At 16 cents per kWh, even the last example is about 2 cents. The watts to kWh calculator runs your own figures.

The extension service makes a related point: when an appliance has a range of settings, what it uses depends on the setting. On a toaster, a darker shade doesn't raise the wattage; it keeps the elements on longer.

What a toaster asks of a home battery

For a battery backup system, a toaster is a power problem, not an energy problem.

  • Energy is negligible. A few hundredths of a kWh per batch barely registers against a home battery's storage.
  • Instantaneous draw is the test. An 1,800-watt toaster has to fit inside the inverter's continuous output along with the refrigerator, lights and anything else running at that moment.
  • No motor surge. A toaster is a resistive load. Unlike a refrigerator or sump pump, it doesn't spike above its rating when it starts.
  • Circuit placement decides it. If the kitchen countertop circuits aren't on the critical load panel, the toaster is off in an outage however large the battery is.

The critical load panel planner checks whether a battery can carry the circuits you choose. When kitchen circuits are part of a backup plan, they are listed and checked during design on the home battery and backup projects Seamless Home coordinates. Get a free estimate to start. Frequently asked questions

How many watts does a toaster use?

Usually 800 to 1,400 watts, the range Virginia Cooperative Extension gives for toasters. Two-slice models are often 850 to 900 watts; four-slice models with two sets of controls can be 1,500 to 1,800 watts. The exact figure is on the rating label under the toaster.

How many amps does a toaster draw?

Divide watts by volts. On a 120-volt outlet, an 850-watt toaster draws about 7.1 amps, a 900-watt toaster 7.5 amps, a 1,500-watt toaster 12.5 amps and an 1,800-watt toaster 15 amps.

Does a 4-slice toaster use twice the power of a 2-slice?

Close to it when both sides are on. Cuisinart's 4-slice compact toaster is rated at 1,800 watts with dual control panels, against 900 watts for its 2-slice compact model. If you only toast on one side, a dual-control toaster draws roughly half its rating.

How much electricity does a toaster use per day?

Very little, because it runs for minutes. Multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000. As an illustration, a 1,200-watt toaster used for 3 minutes is 0.06 kWh; at 16 cents per kWh that is about a penny.

Why does my toaster trip the breaker?

Usually because another heating appliance, such as a coffee maker, kettle, microwave or air fryer, is running on the same kitchen circuit. A 15-amp toaster plus almost anything else exceeds a 20-amp breaker. Move one appliance to a receptacle on a different circuit or run them one after the other.

Can a home battery run a toaster in an outage?

Yes, if the kitchen circuit is on the battery's critical-load panel and the inverter's continuous output covers the toaster plus whatever else is running. Energy isn't the problem; a few minutes of toasting is a few hundredths of a kWh. The instantaneous draw, up to 1,800 watts, is what has to fit.
