A split system has at minimum two halves. Outside there is the condenser or heat pump, which contains the compressor. Inside there is a coil, usually sitting on a furnace or inside an air handler, with a blower moving house air across it.

How much heat that system moves per unit of electricity depends on all of it. The compressor does the work, but the indoor coil determines how much surface area is available to exchange heat into, the blower determines how much air crosses that surface, and the metering device determines how refrigerant is fed to it. Pair the same compressor with a smaller coil and the performance changes.

So the industry does not rate compressors. It rates combinations, measured together under a standard test procedure. The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute publishes the results in a public directory of certified product performance, and each tested combination gets its own entry with:

  • the outdoor unit model number,
  • the indoor coil or air handler model number,
  • the furnace model number where one is part of the set,
  • the resulting SEER2, EER2 and, for heat pumps, HSPF2,
  • and a single AHRI Reference Number identifying that combination.

That reference number is the thing worth asking for. It is the only compact way to say "this exact set of equipment, tested together, produced this rating."

What a mismatch actually costs

Here is the part that makes this worth a homeowner's attention rather than only a technician's.

A mismatched system generally works. The house gets cold. Nothing alarms, nothing fails inspection, and the customer has no reason to suspect anything. A coil substituted at the supply house because the specified one was backordered produces a system that cools perfectly adequately.

What has been lost is not comfort. It is the rating.

An untested combination does not have a lower SEER2. It has an unknown one. There is no certified figure for it, because nobody measured it. And three things quietly depend on that figure existing:

Rebates. Utility and state efficiency programmes that pay against a performance threshold generally want to see a certified rating for the installed combination. A claim submitted against equipment with no matching certificate is a claim with a problem in it, and the problem surfaces after the money has been spent.

Warranty terms. Manufacturer coverage can be conditioned on the equipment being installed as a certified match, alongside the more familiar conditions about registration deadlines and licensed installation. Terms vary by manufacturer and are worth reading rather than assuming.

The operating cost the customer was shown. If a bill comparison was part of the sale, it was calculated from the quoted efficiency figure. When that figure no longer describes the installed system, the comparison does not either.

None of this is visible on the day of the installation. It surfaces at the rebate claim, or at a warranty conversation years later, or never — which is not the same as it not having happened.

What changed about refrigerants, and why it belongs on the quote

There is a second thing a 2026 quote should be explicit about, and it is genuinely new.

Under the EPA's Technology Transitions Rule, new residential air conditioning equipment is required to use refrigerants below a global warming potential of 700. That is why current equipment runs on R-454B or R-32 rather than R-410A, whose global warming potential is far above the limit. Manufacturing and import of new R-410A residential split systems stopped on January 1, 2025.

But a final rule issued in 2026 permits the continued installation of R-410A units that were manufactured or imported before that cutoff, until existing stock runs out.

Which means a quote written today can legitimately be for either. Both are lawful. They are not, however, the same purchase: they differ in what refrigerant will be available and at what price over the system's service life, and in what a future technician will be working on. Which one you are buying is a fact that belongs in writing.

R-410A is not banned. Servicing and recharging an existing R-410A system remains entirely legal, and a homeowner with one does not need to do anything.

The conversation worth having before the order is placed

The timing matters more than the question.

An AHRI Reference Number is generated from the equipment selection. Once the contractor has decided which outdoor unit and which indoor coil, the reference number either exists for that pairing or it does not. Asked afterwards, it becomes an audit of a decision already made and already installed, at which point the options are to accept it or to argue.

What to ask for, in writing, on the proposal:

  1. The model number of the outdoor unit.
  2. The model number of the indoor coil or air handler.
  3. The model number of the furnace, if one is included.
  4. The AHRI Reference Number for that combination.
  5. The SEER2, EER2 and, for a heat pump, HSPF2 that the certificate states.
  6. The refrigerant the equipment uses.

Then look the reference number up yourself. The directory is public. You are checking three narrow things: that the number resolves to a real entry, that the model numbers match your quote character for character, and that the efficiency figures on the certificate are the ones the proposal claimed.

A contractor who has selected the equipment properly can produce this in a few minutes, and most will do it without being asked twice. The request is not adversarial; it is the same class of request as asking for a permit number or a licence number.

What a certificate does not do

It is worth being precise about the limits, because a certificate is sometimes treated as a guarantee of outcome and it is not one.

AHRI ratings are laboratory measurements taken under standardised conditions. Your house is not a laboratory. The delivered performance of a correctly matched system still depends on:

  • whether the ductwork can actually move the airflow the coil was rated at,
  • whether the refrigerant charge was set correctly at startup rather than approximated,
  • what the static pressure in the duct system is,
  • and whether anyone measured any of that and wrote it down.

A properly matched system installed carelessly will underperform its certificate. What makes it worth a homeowner's time is what the number does to the paperwork.
