Where a Dryer Vent Can and Cannot Terminate — and the 35-Foot Length Budget

A clothes dryer is the only appliance in a house that deliberately blows several pounds of water and a continuous stream of combustible fibre into a pipe, and then relies on that pipe being clear for the next fifteen years.
The duct is almost always installed by whoever is closest to it at the time — a laundry-room remodel, an appliance delivery, a basement finish — and it disappears behind drywall the same week. What it cost to route, in the only currency the code recognises, is invisible from that point on.
There are exactly two questions worth settling before that happens. Where does it end, and how much of its length budget has the route already spent?
Question one: where the duct is allowed to end
Dryer exhaust must be conveyed to the outdoors through an independent exhaust system. It may not be connected into any other duct, vent or chimney, and it may not discharge into an attic, a crawlspace or any other concealed space inside the building envelope.
That prohibition is not about neatness. A dryer moves roughly a gallon of water per load out of wet laundry, and an attic has no mechanism for getting rid of it. Sheathing absorbs it, condenses it on the cold side, and stays wet long enough to support decay. The lint arrives in the same airstream and settles on the insulation. Neither condition announces itself; both show up years later as a roof problem that nobody connects to the laundry.
The soffit trap
The most common well-intentioned version of this failure is a duct terminating into a ventilated soffit. It looks like the outdoors, it is out of sight from the ground, and the installer believes the air is leaving the building.
It is not. A ventilated soffit is an intake for the attic, and a soffit termination puts humid, lint-laden air directly into the path that draws air up under the roof deck. The model code closes the gap explicitly — openings in ventilated soffits are named among the openings a termination must be held away from, which makes a soffit the one place a dryer termination most conclusively does not belong.
What actually decides the location
Here is the part that gets argued at inspection and settled in the wrong order.
The manufacturer's installation instructions govern the termination location. Where the instructions specify where the outlet may be, that is the requirement, and it is enforceable as the condition of the appliance's listing.
Only where the instructions are silent does the code's default apply: the exhaust duct terminates not less than 3 feet in any direction from openings into the building, including openings in ventilated soffits.
Two further requirements apply to every termination regardless of which of those governs:
- it is equipped with a backdraft damper, and
- screens are not permitted at the termination.
The screen prohibition is the one people undo. Insect mesh over a dryer cap is a rational-looking modification that guarantees the exact restriction the whole section exists to prevent, because lint blinds a screen in a season and a blinded screen turns a 35-foot duct into a closed pipe. The damper does the job the screen was meant to do — it opens on airflow and closes by gravity — without offering lint anything to accumulate on.
Question two: the length budget
The second requirement is a fixed allowance that the route spends as it goes.
The maximum developed length of the exhaust duct is 35 feet, measured from the connection to the transition duct at the dryer to the outlet terminal. Developed length means the path the duct actually takes through the building, not the straight-line distance between the laundry room and the wall, and it does not include the transition duct.
Every fitting then deducts from that allowance as an equivalent length, because a bend costs pressure that straight duct does not. For 4-inch duct the model table assigns:

The arithmetic is unforgiving and it is the whole reason laundry-room location is a design decision rather than a finish decision. A route that leaves the back of the dryer, turns up into the wall, crosses a floor cavity, turns again to get around a joist, and turns a third time to reach the exterior has spent 15 feet on elbows before a single foot of straight pipe is counted. Twenty feet of budget remains for a path that, on the plan, looked like twelve.

Where the manufacturer is more restrictive
The 35-foot figure is the code's default, not a permission. Dryer manufacturers publish their own maximum duct lengths, and those are frequently shorter — 25 feet is common, and the number varies with the number of elbows the manufacturer assumes.
Where the appliance is more restrictive, the appliance governs, because the installation instructions are part of the listing that the code requires the appliance to be installed in accordance with. A duct run that satisfies the code and violates the dryer's own instructions is not a compliant installation, and it is also a warranty problem.
The tag that survives the drywall
Where an installation relies on a length permitted by something other than the default, the code requires the equivalent length of the exhaust duct to be identified on a permanent label or tag, located within 6 feet of the exhaust duct connection.
This is the single most useful item in the section and the one most often skipped, because its beneficiary is not the person installing it. It is the appliance installer five years later, standing in front of a wall, deciding whether the dryer being delivered today can work on the duct behind it. Without the tag, that is a guess. With it, it is a reading.
The duct itself
The physical specification is short, and each item in it corresponds to a failure mode:
- Rigid metal, smooth interior, not less than 0.016 inch thick, 4 inches nominal diameter. Ribbed or corrugated interior surfaces catch lint at every ridge.
- Joints made in the direction of airflow, with the insert end of each length extending into the next in the direction of flow, so lint is not presented with a lip to build on.
- No fasteners protruding into the duct. Sheet-metal screws through a dryer duct create a lint collector at every joint, which is why the code prohibits screws or similar fasteners that protrude into the interior of the duct. Joints are sealed and fastened by means that leave the bore clear.
- Support at intervals not exceeding 12 feet, so the run does not sag into a low point that holds lint and condensate.
- Transition duct: a single length, listed and labelled to UL 2158A, not greater than 8 feet, and not concealed within construction. The transition duct is the flexible connector behind the appliance. It is not a duct system and it is not permitted to become one by being pushed into a wall.
Why this is an accountability problem, not a trivia problem
Every requirement above is checkable in about ninety seconds while the wall is open, and effectively uncheckable afterwards without a borescope.
That asymmetry is what makes the duct route a scope item rather than a detail. It is the same reason a basement egress opening belongs on the plan rather than the punch list: both are decided by framing, and both cost an order of magnitude more to correct once the space is finished. On a laundry relocation, a basement finish or a whole-house remodel, the duct route is decided by framing and cabinet layout long before anyone with a mechanical background looks at it, and the person who eventually connects it inherits whatever path the framing left behind. By then the elbow count is fixed.
The same pattern runs through the rest of the concealed work on a remodel. Where an HVAC condensate drain can discharge is the same shape of problem on a different line — a small-bore path above a finished ceiling whose failure mode is expensive and whose compliance is unverifiable once closed. And on a permitted job the scope can reach further than expected: whether a permit triggers a smoke and CO alarm upgrade depends on which trade pulled it, not on how large the job felt.

What is the 35-foot limit actually measuring?
Developed length — the real routed path of the rigid duct, measured from the point where it connects to the transition duct at the dryer to the outlet terminal, not a straight-line distance and not including the transition duct itself. Fittings are then deducted from that budget as equivalent lengths, because a bend costs airflow that straight duct does not. For 4-inch duct the model table assigns 5 feet to a 90-degree elbow and 2 feet 6 inches to a 45-degree elbow. Four 90-degree elbows on the route therefore consume 20 of the 35 feet before any straight pipe is counted, which is why a laundry room in the middle of a floor plan is a different proposition from one on an exterior wall.
What happens if the route is longer than 35 feet?
Two things, and they are commonly confused. First, the manufacturer's instructions may permit a longer or shorter run than the code default, and where the appliance is more restrictive the appliance governs — a listing that allows 25 feet does not become 35 because the code says so. Second, where an installation relies on an engineered or manufacturer-permitted length, the code requires the equivalent length of the exhaust duct to be identified on a permanent label or tag located within 6 feet of the exhaust duct connection, so that the next person to install a dryer in that space can see what the duct behind the wall will support. That tag is the only record that survives the drywall, and it is one of the cheapest items on a job to get right and one of the most irritating to reconstruct later.
Is the flexible duct behind the dryer allowed at all?
Yes, but it is a specific, limited product and not the same thing as the duct system. Which code section is this, and did the numbering change?
It is Section M1502 of the International Residential Code. The numbering of the length provision did change between editions, which causes real confusion when a contractor and an inspector are reading different books: the maximum-length provision and its fitting table sit at M1502.4.5.1 and Table M1502.4.5.1 in the 2015 and 2018 editions, and at M1502.4.6.1 and Table M1502.4.6.1 in the 2021 and 2024 editions, with the identification tag renumbered alongside them. The substantive figures — 35 feet, 5 feet per 90-degree elbow, 2 feet 6 inches per 45 — are materially unchanged across those editions.
