Drywall Requirements Between a Garage and the House (IRC R302.6)

Quick answer
The International Residential Code requires the garage to be separated from the dwelling by the materials listed in Table R302.6, and those materials differ by location. Not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board applied to the garage side separates the garage from the residence and its attics. Where that floor-ceiling assembly is used as the separation, the structure supporting it must also be protected with not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board. None of this is a fire-resistance-rated assembly, and none of it covers the door: R302.6 states that openings in garage walls comply with Section R302.5, which is a separate section with its own requirements for the door, the ducts and the penetrations.
Ask three people what the wall between an attached garage and the house has to be and you will get three answers: a one-hour firewall, 5/8-inch Type X everywhere, or "just drywall." The first is wrong, the second is wrong in a way that costs money, and the third is wrong in the one place it matters most.
The requirement is Section R302.6 of the International Residential Code, and it is unusually short. The whole of it is that the garage shall be separated as required by Table R302.6, that openings in garage walls shall comply with Section R302.5, and that the provision does not apply to garage walls perpendicular to the adjacent dwelling unit wall.
Everything people argue about is in the table, or in the other section it points to.
It is a separation, not a rated assembly
The section is titled "Dwelling/garage fire separation," which is where the firewall idea comes from. But the code does not require a fire-resistance-rated assembly here, and it does not require an hourly rating. It prescribes materials.
That distinction has a practical consequence in both directions. A contractor who believes an hourly rating is required may propose a double-layer build-up that the code never asked for. A contractor who believes any drywall satisfies it will hang half-inch board under a bonus room and fail. The correct mental model is a membrane with a specified thickness and a specified fastening schedule, applied to the garage side, and judged on whether it is actually there.
It is also not a fire wall, which is a defined term describing a very different element with continuity and structural-stability requirements. Nothing in a house has one.
The table is four rows, and they are four different answers

Read that table as four independent questions rather than one rule with exceptions, because a single garage can land in three of the rows at once.
Row one is the default, and it includes the attic. The separation from the residence and its attics is half-inch board on the garage side. A garage with a plain attic over it — trusses, insulation, no floor — is a row-one garage. Its ceiling requires half-inch gypsum board, not Type X.
Row two is the one that gets generalised. Five-eighths Type X is required where there are habitable rooms above the garage, applied to the garage ceiling. A bedroom, an office or a finished bonus room over the garage puts you here. An attic does not.
Row three is the one that gets forgotten entirely. Where the floor-ceiling assembly is being used as the separation — which is exactly the bonus-room case — the structure supporting it must also be protected with not less than half-inch gypsum board. In a normal garage that means the walls holding up the room above are part of the assembly, not just the ceiling under it. A garage with a correctly boarded ceiling and bare studs on the supporting walls has done the visible half of the job.
Row four catches detached garages. Less than three feet from a dwelling unit on the same lot and the interior side of the exterior walls within that area needs half-inch board. The trigger is a distance, not whether the building touches the house.
The fastening schedule is part of the requirement
The right board fastened the wrong way is not the right board. The gypsum board fastening requirements sit in Table R702.3.5, and the schedule for the 5/8-inch Type X at a garage ceiling beneath habitable rooms is tighter than people expect: on framing at 24 inches on centre, it calls for 1-7/8-inch 6d cooler nails or 1-1/4-inch Type W screws at 6 inches on centre.
By comparison, the half-inch board on the walls separating the garage from the dwelling is fastened at 8 inches on centre with 1-5/8-inch 5d cooler nails, or with 1-1/4-inch Type W screws at 16 inches on centre where framing is 16 inches on centre, and at 12 inches on centre where framing is 24 inches on centre.
A ceiling hung at the spacing a crew uses for ordinary interior walls has the correct product on it and does not comply. This is a genuinely easy one to get wrong and a genuinely easy one to check, because the fastener spacing is visible until it is finished.
R302.6 does not cover the door
This is the part worth carrying away, because it explains why so many summaries of this topic are incomplete.
Section R302.6 ends by saying that openings in garage walls shall comply with Section R302.5. The door, the ducts and the penetrations are all in that other section. So when another code provision — or a contractor, or an article — says a space is "separated from the dwelling in accordance with R302.6," that phrase refers to the membrane and pulls in nothing about the opening.
You see the cross-reference used exactly that way elsewhere in the code. The residential energy storage provisions permit a battery in an attached garage that is separated from the living space in accordance with R302.6, which is one of the reasons where a home battery can and cannot be installed turns into a drywall question rather than an electrical one. The reference is doing real work, and it is doing less work than it looks like it is doing.
Here is what R302.5 adds.
The door (R302.5.1). A solid wood door not less than 1-3/8 inches thick, a solid or honeycomb-core steel door not less than 1-3/8 inches thick, or a 20-minute fire-rated door. It must have a self-closing or automatic-closing device and it must be self-latching. And it is not permitted to open directly into a room used for sleeping purposes.
Both of those hardware requirements are routinely absent on houses that pass a casual look. A closer gets removed because it slams, or a strike plate drifts out of alignment and the door rests against it without latching. A door that does not latch is not a closed door for this purpose.
The ducts (R302.5.2). Ducts in the garage, and ducts penetrating the separating walls or ceilings, must be not less than No. 26 gage sheet steel and must have no openings into the garage. The retrofit that violates this is a sympathetic one: someone adds a supply register in the garage to make it usable in winter. That register is a direct air path between the garage and the bedrooms, which is the specific thing this whole part of the code exists to prevent.
Everything else that pokes through (R302.11, Item 4). Openings around vents, pipes, ducts, cables and wires must be filled with an approved material that resists the free passage of flame and products of combustion. The filling material is not required to meet the ASTM E136 criteria. On a retrofit this is the item most likely to be skipped, because the holes get cut after the board is up and nobody comes back to seal them.
Why published figures disagree, and what to do about it
While checking the table above against more than one source, two reputable references gave different materials for the first row: half-inch gypsum board in one, 5/8-inch Type X in the other.
Both were accurate. One was reproducing the model IRC table and the other was reproducing a state amendment, without labelling it as one. This provision is amended more often than most, and a jurisdiction is entitled to require the heavier product throughout.
The general lesson is the one that applies to every figure on this site: a number that appears in only one place has not been verified, and a number that appears differently in two places is usually a local amendment rather than an error. The specific lesson is narrower. On garage separation, confirm the thickness with the jurisdiction before ordering board, because the difference between half-inch and 5/8-inch Type X across a garage ceiling and two walls is a real line item, and which code edition and which amendments apply is the authority having jurisdiction's answer rather than a matter of general practice.
What this looks like in a scope of work
Every requirement above is decidable before anyone buys materials, and none of it is visible in a quote that reads "drywall garage — 1 day."
A scope that will not produce an argument states four things: the board thickness and type for the walls, the board thickness and type for the ceiling together with what is above it, whether the supporting walls are included, and whether the door, its closer and its latch are in scope or excluded. Add a line for sealing penetrations and you have covered the section and the section it points to.
Those five lines cost nothing at quotation. They are the entire content of the dispute afterwards. The garage separation is a prescriptive membrane, not a rated assembly. Half-inch gypsum board on the garage side separates the garage from the residence and its attics; 5/8-inch Type X goes on the ceiling only where habitable rooms sit above; the structure supporting that assembly needs half-inch board too; and a detached garage within three feet of the dwelling is caught as well. Fastening spacing is part of compliance, not a detail. And the door, the ducts and the penetrations are governed by Section R302.5 and Section R302.11, which a reference to R302.6 alone does not include.

Is the wall between a garage and a house required to be a one-hour firewall?
No, and both halves of that phrase are wrong. The IRC does not require a fire-resistance-rated assembly between a private garage and the dwelling. Table R302.6 prescribes materials, principally gypsum board of a stated thickness applied to the garage side, and compliance is judged on whether the specified material is present and properly fastened rather than on an hourly rating from a tested assembly. Does a garage ceiling need 5/8-inch Type X drywall?
Only where there are habitable rooms above the garage. That is the row of Table R302.6 people generalise from. A garage with nothing but an attic above it falls under the first row, which requires not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board applied to the garage side, covering the separation from the residence and its attics. Where a bedroom, office or bonus room sits over the garage, the ceiling requires not less than 5/8-inch Type X gypsum board or equivalent, and the walls supporting that floor-ceiling assembly require not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board as well. Getting this backwards in either direction is common: 5/8-inch Type X hung under a plain attic is harmless but wasted, and 1/2-inch board hung under a bonus room is a failed inspection.
What are the code requirements for the door between the garage and the house?
They are in Section R302.5.1, not R302.6. The door must be a solid wood door not less than 1-3/8 inches thick, a solid or honeycomb-core steel door not less than 1-3/8 inches thick, or a 20-minute fire-rated door. That second half is the one that gets violated: a supply register added in the garage to take the chill off it creates a direct air path between the garage and the living space, which is the precise thing the separation exists to prevent. It is a common and well-meant retrofit and it defeats the assembly.
What about pipes, wires and other penetrations through the separation?
Penetrations through the required separation must be protected at openings around vents, pipes, ducts, cables and wires with an approved material to resist the free passage of flame and products of combustion. That requirement sits in Section R302.11 Item 4 rather than in R302.6, which is part of why the topic is scattered. The annular space around a penetration is not required to meet the ASTM E136 noncombustibility criteria. In practice this is the detail most often left undone on a retrofit, because the drywall goes up and the holes cut for a dryer vent, a hose bib or a run of romex are never sealed afterwards.
Does the separation apply to a detached garage?
It can. Table R302.6 includes a row for garages located less than 3 feet from a dwelling unit on the same lot, which requires not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board or equivalent applied to the interior side of exterior walls that are within that area. So a detached garage built close to the house is not automatically outside the requirement, and the trigger is the separation distance rather than whether the structure touches the dwelling. Can my state change these thicknesses?
Yes, and this is one of the provisions states amend most. The model table requires not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board for the separation from the residence and attics, but some jurisdictions require 5/8-inch Type X in that position instead. Published references disagree with one another for exactly this reason, because many of them are reproducing an amended state code rather than the model text without saying so.
