Those are measured minimums. A decorative L-metal that stops short of the deck lap, or that is face-nailed into fascia alone without the deck fastening the section describes, is not a compliance story.

Eave versus rake: the sequence that gets reversed

The underlayment rule is the part most often flattened into "underlayment goes under the drip edge" or "over the drip edge" as a single habit.

Doing both edges the same way produces a roof that looks finished and fails the section on one of them. On a survey, the rake is the edge to look at twice.

Scope: asphalt shingles, not every covering

R905.2.8.5 sits inside Section R905.2, the asphalt-shingle provisions. It is not a free-floating Chapter 9 rule for tile, metal panels, or membranes. Those coverings have their own edge and flashing sections. A low-slope membrane roof is not failing R905.2.8.5 by lacking asphalt-shingle drip edge; it is under a different part of the chapter entirely.

That scope limit matters for solar scoping. The question is "is this an asphalt-shingle roof?" before "is the drip edge present?"

Where an array meets the perimeter

An array does not waive R905.2.8.5. What it changes:

  • Inspection access. Modules and rails at the eave or rake hide the edge detail. A missing or short drip edge is harder to see after install and harder to photograph for a claim.
  • Repair cost. Correcting the edge usually means working the perimeter shingle courses. With an array in the way, that is a detach-and-reset conversation rather than a half-day roofing call.
  • Leak attribution. Water that enters at a failed rake or eave travels under the covering and under the array before it shows up inside. The last crew who put penetrations near that edge inherits the argument, which is why settling the perimeter at survey is part of attachment accountability even though drip edge is not an attachment flashing.

Fire access pathways and setbacks can keep modules off some edges; they do not install drip edge for you.

Drip edge is not an ice barrier

Two different eave treatments get conflated:

  • Drip edge — metal edge detail, R905.2.8.5, eaves and rakes, asphalt shingles.
  • Ice barrier — membrane treatment, R905.1.2, only where Table R301.2 designates a history of ice damming, for named coverings, measured to a point inside the exterior wall line.

A Yes-jurisdiction asphalt roof commonly needs both. A No-jurisdiction asphalt roof still needs drip edge. Neither substitutes for the other.

What to capture before rails go down

  • Covering type confirmed as asphalt shingle (otherwise this section is the wrong checklist)
  • Drip edge present at both eaves and rakes
  • Visible overlap at joints; projection below sheathing; evidence of deck fastening rather than fascia-only attachment
  • Underlayment sequence at a rake edge, if it can be seen at a cut or detail
  • Condition: rust-through, pull-away, or crushed sections at ladder and scaffold points
  • Whether a reroof is already in scope, so the edge can be replaced in sequence rather than under an array

Is drip edge the same as an ice barrier?

No. Drip edge is a metal edge flashing detail under R905.2.8.5. An ice barrier is an eave membrane treatment under R905.1.2, required only where the jurisdiction designates a history of ice damming, for named coverings, at a measured distance inside the exterior wall line. A roof can need both, either, or — in a No jurisdiction on a non-listed covering — neither. They answer different questions and are installed in different layers.

What if the existing drip edge is damaged or missing?

It is roofing scope, not a sealant touch-up. R905.2.8.5 is an installation requirement for the shingle roof; a missing, rusted, or under-lapped edge is corrected by installing compliant drip edge in the right sequence with the underlayment, which usually means working the edge course of shingles. On a roof that will carry an array, that work belongs before the mounts go in, or it becomes part of a later removal and reinstall.
