What warranties come with a solar system?
A solar system is sold as one 25-year product but warranted as several separate promises, each with a different counterparty, term, and set of exclusions: a panel product warranty and a separate panel performance guarantee from the module manufacturer, an inverter warranty, a battery warranty where storage is fitted, a workmanship warranty from the installing contractor, often a separate roof penetration warranty, and a monitoring term.
The weak point is almost never the panels. They usually carry the longest term. It is whichever layer has the shortest term, historically the inverter and monitoring, or whichever layer depends on the installing contractor still existing. A workmanship warranty is only as good as the business behind it.
The most-missed exclusion: manufacturer warranties often cover the part but not the labour to diagnose, access, and replace it. On a roof-mount that labour can exceed the component's value, so a fully-in-warranty system can still produce a bill.

Watch out: Covers the part, not usually the labour to remove and replace it, and not the scaffolding or crane to reach it. It is also worthless if the manufacturer is no longer trading.

Why installer longevity is part of the product
Two of the layers on this list, workmanship and roof penetration, are not manufacturer promises at all. They are promises from the installing business. That makes them structurally different from the hardware warranties, because their value depends on a local company still trading in year eight, not on a multinational's balance sheet.
The residential solar industry has given homeowners plenty of reason to care about this. When an installer closes, its workmanship obligations generally do not transfer to anyone, and the homeowner is left holding hardware warranties that cover parts but not the labour to fit them. That is the actual failure mode behind most orphaned-system stories, not defective panels.

It is the layer most likely to be needed in the first decade, because installation errors surface earlier than hardware defects, and it is the layer that depends entirely on the installing business still existing. A long workmanship warranty from a company that closes is worth nothing.
Who is responsible if a solar panel leaks through the roof?+
Normally the installing contractor, under either the workmanship warranty or a separate roof penetration warranty. In practice it is the most disputed claim on a solar system, because responsibility can be argued between the solar installer and the roofer, and because mounting an array can void an existing roof warranty if the original roofer was not involved in the penetration work. Where a roof is near the end of its life, resolving the roof before the array is installed avoids the dispute entirely.
Do solar warranties cover labor?+
Frequently not, and this is the most commonly misunderstood exclusion. A manufacturer's product warranty typically covers the replacement part, while the labour to diagnose the fault, remove and reinstall the module or inverter, and any access equipment such as scaffolding or a lift is often excluded. On a roof-mounted system that labour can exceed the value of the component. So a system can be fully in warranty and a claim can still produce a bill for the homeowner.
Who holds the warranties on a leased or PPA solar system?+
Under a third-party-owned arrangement the provider owns the equipment and normally carries the hardware warranties and the responsibility for maintaining the system, which is one of the genuine advantages of the structure for a homeowner. Installation-related layers such as workmanship and roof penetration still trace back to whoever performed the installation. The specific allocation is set by the lease or PPA agreement, so it should be read rather than assumed.
